Butaiura
Tokyo / 2023

Located in the basement of a large commercial complex, this space combines an art gallery and restaurant. Within a space with minimal interior finishes, a dark red steel pipe frame is placed. The frame serves as a buffer to maintain a proper distance between the two areas, which have completely different functions, and as a support for temporary exhibition walls. After viewing the contemporary art, visitors are invited to enjoy food and drinks in a dimly lit corner in the back of the space. Likening this relationship to that of a stage and its wings, this space is named "Butaiura (backstage)".
